Sniffles…coughs…sneezing! It must be cold and flu season. There are few things worse than seeing your kids sick but not being able to help them feel better. These cold and flu season survival tips for kids will help them stay healthy and be able to get over the sniffles a lot quicker.
Cold and Flu Season Survival Tips for Kids
It seems as though my boys bring home every bacteria possible from school each week. At least one of them is always sniffling. Over the years I have learned a few things that help keep the cold and flu bugs away or at least lessen the time they spend at our house.
Cold and Flu Season Survival Tips
Wash Hands
It seems that this would be a given, but my boys always seem to forget. The first thing I have them do when they get home from school and before rummaging for snacks, is wash their hands. And I double check to make sure they used SOAP because, well they are boys and tend to forget that little detail!
Yogurt for Snacks
Probiotics are known to help reduce and shorten the cold and flu. My boys love yogurt, but you could also find a probiotic that is suitable for children.
Wash Hand Towels Often
I don’t even want to think about how many germs are on hand towels! Make sure to swap out your hand towels everyday during cold and flu season.
Get Enough Sleep
Being sick is exhausting! Make sure your children are taking a nap during the day or going to bed extra early when they are sick. Their body needs that time to rest and repair.
Sanitize, Sanitize, Sanitize
I always make sure to wipe down all door knobs, light switches, television remote controls, tap faucets, etc with disinfectant wipes.
Drink Up
Drinking clear liquids helps to thin out mucus and make it easier to clear from your body. Make sure your kids are drinking plenty of water every day.
Chicken Soup
Chicken soup is not only yummy, but helpful in fighting off a cold or flu bug. The steamy soup helps open up a stuffy nose and the salt can help a sore throat. Plus, most kids like it so hopefully will eat it without a fight.
Hands Off!
Teach your kids to keep their hands off their face and especially out of their mouth. This helps keep germs from getting into their little bodies.
Dietary Supplements
Ask your doctor for some recommendations of supplements that can help lessen the duration of the cold and flu. My boys take Vitamin C and Elderberry. If they feel a cold coming on they take Zinc supplements as well.
Have a Reliable Humidifier
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends using a cool mist humidifier during cold and flu season to help ease coughing and congestion so children can sleep better at night.
We have had a Vicks Humidifier ever since my oldest son was a baby. My boys have a history of croup and even pneumonia, so anytime I start to hear sniffles and coughing, we get the humidifier out. I keep it turned on throughout the day while they are playing in their room and at night to keep the air from getting too dry.
The Vicks Filter Free Cool Mist Humidifier quietly produces a cool mist that provides temporary relief from cough and congestion, especially during the night. It can be hard to get enough rest if you are up coughing all night and sleep is so important to help get over a cold or flu bug.
Vicks Humidifiers are the most trusted brand for cough and cold relief and are helpful in keeping proper humidity levels in your home, which reduces the survival of flu viruses on surfaces and in the air.
You can purchase a Vicks Humidifier here.
