Time for another Flashback Friday! Last week I shared E’s Cookie Monster Cake we made for his first birthday. Well, skip ahead one year and we made this Easy Monkey Cake for our little monkey! He has always been a little stinker and the term monkey fits him quite well.
How to Make an Easy Monkey Cake
This cake was pretty simple if my memory is correct. Which it may not be. I’m getting old. Don’t judge. 😉
Step 1: Bake your favorite cake recipe in a large Pyrex bowl but fill up one muffin tin to use for the ears.
Step 2: Remove from bowl and let cool completely.
Step 3: Frost the entire cake and cupcake with chocolate frosting and let it set for awhile.
Step 4: Make the mouth and ears by combining vanilla frosting with a bit of yellow/orange food coloring. (You can make it to whatever shade you want.)
Step 5: Attach the ears to the side of the head with a toothpick or two.
Step 6: Use licorice rope to make the nostrils and mouth.
Step 7: Add Junior Mints for the eyes.
Step 8: Use a frosting decorator bag and small round tip to make the curly hair on top. That part was fun! 🙂
And there you have it. Can I just say how much I LOVE easy birthday cakes. This was perfect for our little monkey.
And look, he had his super cheesy smile way back then. I just love this boy more than words can say.
And, you may have noticed that in this picture the monkey cake has different eyes. Baby E got to the Junior Mints before I could take the picture of the two of them together and apparently they were all gone. My mom had these eyes in her kitchen drawer and I can’t for the life of me remember what she had them for. lol! You just never know what you will find in a kitchen junk drawer. 🙂
