I’m so excited to share this fun craft with you! A few years back my husband and I went on a Caribbean cruise and on our different stops I noticed all of the wind chimes made with bamboo but for some crazy reason, I never bought one. I’ve regretted it ever since. Not only do I love how this wind chime turned out but I loved using Gemz by Darice to add a bit of “bling”. This really sparkles in the sun!
When I received my box of Gemz, I loved all of the colors it came in and how easy it was to peel and stick these gems onto anything. I am all about keeping things easy. My 4-year-old was able to help with this craft and had fun telling me which colors to do next and helping to put them on.
For this craft you will need:
- 1 Large Can
- Bamboo sticks
- Sheets of Gemz or Bling on a Roll
- Fishing Line
- Rope
Step 1:
Cut the Gemz sheets to the width you want and continually stick them to the can until it’s covered in blingy gems.
Step 2:
Use a drill with a small bit to drill holes through the can and attach fishing line.
Step 3:
Cut bamboo to the length you want it and drill a hole for fishing line to go through. Tie the fishing line on to the bamboo. My boys also wanted to decorate the bamboo with the Gemz so we added a little strip to the top and bottom.
(Just a note, you can buy bamboo sheets at some hardware stores but they can sometimes be pricey. I got lucky and found a neighbor who grows bamboo in their yard. Who would have thought you could grow bamboo in the desert?)
Step 4:
Drill a hole through the top of the can to fit the rope and tie a knot so it hold. Then hang outside and watch it shine.
This makes a perfect addition to our garden area (which is yet to be planted…sigh. Hopefully Saturday!).

Very creative, great job!! Fun that the kids helped 🙂
Thanks Lindsey. My boys love getting involved in our projects. 🙂
What a fun and unique idea! Great DIY wind chimes!!
Thank you! It turned out even better than I thought it would and I love it in the garden.
What a cool idea (and bamboo grows like a weed out here – as long as it has water, it will grow). Might have to give this one a whirl with the munchkin.
Thanks Kelly! You learn something new everyday! I had no idea it grew out here easily, but then again I can’t get anything to grow in my yard. Maybe I should make that my next business since it was about $80/sheet at the hardware store. 🙂 I’ll grow and sell bamboo. 😉
So cute! My daughter loves wind chimes! I had no idea you could just grow bamboo, that’s so cool. I think we might have to make some of these.
I didn’t know you could either. I might have to give it a try. 🙂
My wind chimes come in the form of two cats, a husband and noisy neighbors. LOL. This is adorable and would be a fun project if I had a place to hang them. Darn apartment living! Haha.
Thank you Kim! You could always just hang it in the corner and turn on the A/C or a fan. 😉
Ooh! I bet that is all sparkly and fun in the sun! What a fun idea!!!
Thank you Kassi! It was windy all week last week so we just barely got it outside. It’s a really fun addition to the garden.
I love these windchimes! I bet they REALLY sparkle in the desert sun!
