Today I’m sharing my grandma’s Old Fashioned Sugar Cookies since these are the best sugar cookies I have ever had and the only ones I make.
Old Fashioned Sugar Cookies
These Old Fashioned Sugar Cookies are soft and not too sweet which is something I really love. I typically do not like sugar cookies with frosting because they always are too sweet, but these are perfect with homemade butter cream frosting.
When I was growing up I would spend hours in the kitchen making cookies of all sorts. But, my friends always requested that I make my grandma’s sugar cookie recipe because they really are the best.
How to Make Old Fashioned Sugar Cookies
Directions: (Note that this recipe has been doubled and then doubled again because we LOVE our sugar cookies. This makes about 5 or so dozen cookies so if you don’t need that many, make sure to half the recipe. I always make these around the holidays and we always have just enough.)
Mix Together:
- 6 cups flour
- 2 tsp baking powder
- 2 tsp salt
- 2 tsp baking soda
- 2 cups sugar
Slowly cut in:
- 2 C shortening
Blend in:
- 4 eggs
- 1/2 C milk
- 4 tsp vanilla
Roll out onto a floured surface and cut with your favorite cookie cutters. Place onto a cookie sheet.
Bake at 400° for 6-8 minutes until just browned on the bottom. (The timing is the tricky part. If they aren’t cooked enough they will be too soft and will break but if they are cooked too long then they are not as soft. )
Once cookies are done, remove from pan onto a cooling rack and then frost and decorate with your favorite frosting, sprinkles and candy.
By the time my boys and I are finished making sugar cookies we typically have flour and sprinkles in every corner of the kitchen. It’s a good thing that they taste SO good!
What is your favorite type of Christmas cookie?
