Last week I shared my son’s M&M’s basketball cake that we made for his 7th birthday. Since his birthday fell during the week we did his sports party with friends this weekend and needed a little treat to give to them. Of course we thought of sports cupcakes. I will be sharing all of the fun we had at the party later this week.
These sports cupcakes were a major hit and the boys had a hard time deciding which ball they wanted to eat.
Sports Cupcakes
Supplies:
- Your favorite flavor of cupcakes and frosting
-
Orange M&Ms bought in bulk
-
Black M&Ms bought in bulk
- White M&M’s bought in bulk
- Red licorice
Basketball Cupcakes
To make the basketball cupcakes I frosted with chocolate frosting and then made the black lines out of M&M’s first. Then I filled in with the orange M&M’s. It might be a bit of a stretch but kids like to use their imaginations, right? These were actually the biggest hit of all of the cupcakes. Maybe because they had the most M&M’s. 🙂
Baseball Cupcakes
The baseball cupcakes were my absolute favorite. Maybe because I love baseball. 🙂 These are pretty self-explanatory but I frosted the cupcakes with white frosting and then made the lines for the baseball with Pull and Peel licorice. Then I just filled in with the white M&M’s.
Football Cupcakes
These were the easiest to make and you know how I love easy! Basically just frost the cupcakes with chocolate frosting and then use white M&M’s turned on their sides to make the stitching of the football. I just alternated the ways I turned the M&M’s and it worked perfectly.
Tomorrow I will be showing off my sons fun sports party. We had 14 little boys there so it was a little chaotic but I decided this was the best type of party to have for a group of boys. So check back for details.
I love using M&M’s to decorate treats and cakes for my kids. It makes for fun and unique cakes and is perfect for those who are cake-decorating-challenged like me. 🙂
Here are a couple other creations we have made with M&M’s.
Now that I know you can buy different colors in bulk, the possibilities are endless!

Seriously – I love bopping over to see what you are making for your kids — you make the coolest stuff for them.

Thanks! I figure they are only little once, right?
What?! No hockey cupcakes?! I’m going to cry now. LOL.
Kidding. These are awesome actually. Since I’m also a [sort of] football fan I’d make mine look like that. So much fun!
lol! Well, I guess I could have made an all-black one for a hockey puck but the kids might have been confused. That is the one sport we don’t have out here. 🙂
Ok, I have a slight (HUGE) homemade cupcake obsession… I now have to add these to my ‘must make list’!!
I have that same obsession with baking any home goods. In a dream world I could bake all I wanted, actually eat my treats and not gain weight. 😉
My boys would absolutely love these!!!
How cute! AND SIMPLE! I would have never thought to use M&M’s to make sports cupcakes. BRILLIANT! 🙂
Thanks! I actually love using M&Ms for decorating cakes. Since you can buy the colors you need in bulk you can make pretty much anything.
Love! Perfect for a football party, or BBQ during baseball season too!
Thanks Megan! You could definitely use them for a variety of events.
these turned out so nice
These are just so cute and creative!
Thank you!
