It is Halloween and soon children everywhere will dress up and head outside in hopes of getting treats and not tricks. But, you never know what types of creatures you will find, and just in case you come across a Zombie, you need to be prepared to survive a Zombie Apocalypse.
How to Survive a Zombie Apocalypse
I recently had the chance to interview Rachel Buchholz, editor of National Geographic Kids Magazine and author of How To Survive Anything and we discussed How to Survive a Zombie Apocalypse, because you just never know when one with start, especially around Halloween time. 😉
My boys, as well as the children of other National Geographic Kids Insiders, were able to submit questions that they had about surviving a zombie apocalypse and below is everything you need to know.
Zombie Apocalypse
Are Zombies Afraid of Anything?
Zombies are afraid of major storm systems such as thunderstorms, hurricanes and tornadoes. If they are caught in a thunderstorm, lightning might strike them and will jump from zombie to zombie. Plus they have to watch out for falling debris if they are caught in a hurricane or tornado.
What is the Best Way to Ward Off Zombies?
Zombies are attracted to loud noises to avoid them like you would a venomous snake. Stay on clear paths and out of tall grasses where they may be hiding. If you see one, calmly walk away if it hasn’t seen you yet. If it has, then RUN!
What Do Zombies Eat Besides Human Brains?
Zombies will eat anything they can sink their teeth into. If you encounter a Zombie in the water and they try to eat you, treat them like they are a shark or crocodile and punch them in the face until they let go. They are not good in water.
Do Zombies Have Weaknesses?
Zombies are lazy and will go after the easiest meal. They don’t want to work for their dinner so if you come in contact with one, take off running and don’t stop for at least 200 yds. They will get tired of chasing and find an easier target.
Are There Kid Zombies?
Yes! But they still have their baby teeth so they can’t bite like an adult.
Can Zombies Smell Fear?
Zombies are attracted to strong human smells, so during a zombie apocalypse, make sure to wash daily and don’t let your natural scent get too strong. Also, don’t wear perfume. Keep food put away at night and make sure to do your “business” away from your camp if you are staying outdoors.
When Should You Attack a Zombie and When Should You Hide?
Never attack a zombie unless you are experienced. Take the same precautions you would in a tornado or hurricane. Find somewhere to hide without windows. A storm shelter might be a good option because Zombies go down stairs easily.
Is There Anywhere to Hide That Zombies Won’t Find You?
Zombies don’t like water an don’t swim well, so try to find a desert island. You can survive by catching seafood or eating seaweed and collecting water. You can use the driftwood that comes up on the beach to build a shelter.
If You Can Only Choose One Item to Help You Survive, What Would it Be?
Choose a pop-top off of a soda can because it can be used as a fish-hook, weapon, flint for fire and a reflector to signal help.
How do you keep enough food and water to survive a zombie apocalypse?
Fill up every bathtub you have and limit water to the size of 2 soda cans/day. You will eventually have to go into the woods/nature to survive. Make camp near a fresh water source but be sure to boil the water before drinking. And if you can’t boil or collect rain water or dew to drink, you can catch fish and suck the liquid out of their eyeballs. (GROSS!!! I really hope I never have to do that!!)
As you head out for Halloween, be on the watch for Zombies and remember these tips for how to survive a Zombie Apocalypse!
I hope you enjoyed this fun advice on Zombies. Rachel’s new book, “How to Survive Anything” has a delicate balance of humor and practical advice. You can find out how to survive a shark attack or lightning storm and your kids can find out how to survive embarrassing parents!! My tween needs that advice for sure. 😉 My boys have spent hours pouring over the information in the book and I love that it has both fun and useful advice.
So, I must know…
