When I got married, my grandma threw me a bridal shower and had every guest bring a favorite recipe for me to add to a recipe box so that I would have a few tried-and-true recipes as I started my married life. My great-aunt Afton brought her “famous” Old-Fashioned Lemon Bars and they quickly became one of my favorite recipes.
Old-Fashioned Lemon Bars
My boys like to joke that I don’t have just a sweet tooth, but that I have sweet teeth! In other words, I really, really like sweet treats. I have to be careful when I make these Lemon Bars because I will eat an entire pan. They are just so yummy! And, since these old-fashioned lemon bars came from my great-aunt, they make me think of my childhood and the wonderful family members who are now smiling down on us from heaven. I miss them all like crazy!
Lemon Bars Recipe
Crust:
- 2 C. Flour
- 3/4 C Powdered Sugar
- 1 C. Soft Butter
Mix and press in a 10 1/2 X 15 1/2 greased cookie sheet. Bake at 350° for 12 minutes.
While the crust is baking, mix together:
- 4 large Eggs Beaten
- 2 C. Sugar
- 1/3 C. Lemon Juice
- 1 tsp Vanilla
- 1/4 C + 1 Tbls Flour
Pour over hot crust and bake at 350° for 20 mins. Top with powdered sugar (optional). Let cool completely before cutting.
I love fruity desserts and this recipe has a great mix of sweet, sour and salty. Yum! I made up a batch of these for our last family get-together and I had a hard time keeping my boys out of them so that I could take them.

Love this recipe because it has less sugar than the others I’ve seen (making them for my mom in law…she also has a terrible sweet tooth). However she loves lemon as well and your recipe only calls for 1/3c. compared to 1 cup as literally all the other recipes I saw. Wondering if this will make a huge taste difference.

I use this recipe every time because the taste is so great BUT I do wanna note for others that after pre baking the crust in a 9×13 these lemons bars never come out after the 20 minutes completely cooked. I wobble the pan and they are still wet. So I add as much time as needed until the Wobblies are gone and it’s set. That’s normal. Take it out once it’s JUST set and then cool, powder sugar, refrigerate 🙂
